As a worker, what are my responsibilities?
Watch the videos at the bottom of the page: https://sites.google.com/view/olg-mens-club-tree-lot/home
Show up on time - your prompt attendance helps your co workers, shift captain, customer & cashier
Can't show up? Communicate with your shift captain / try to find a replacement
Do I have to have RSVP'd? It's helpful, but we don't turn away free help.
Can I bring my kid? Kids are welcome as long as you don't mind them around chainsaws and open flames.
Attire
Work gloves, particularly insulated work gloves, are nice
Dress for the weather - boots, layers, hat
Clothes that can get smoky, snags and sap on them - work clothes
We'll have
Safety vests
Safety glasses
Box cutters
Chain saws
Loppers
Beverages & Food (depending on the timing of your shift)
When you arrive:
Get a safety vest from the trailer
Get work gloves if you don't have some
Get a box cutter if you don't have one.
Greet our customers with a warm smile and ask them if they need help. Don't know the answer, find someone who does.
We have 4+ types of trees. Some people know what they want others are pretty new to this or don't remember what they get.
Fraser - very popular, strong branches for ornaments
Balsam
Canaan
White pines (limited selection)
Possibly some Koreans or Siberians (limited selection)
When someone has selected a tree:
Take the tree to the tree preparation area with the guest
Ask if they want a "Fresh Cut" - and cut off the appropriate amount of the bottom of the tree
Wear Eye protection
Keep the chain saws away from string
Typically about 2-3" up from bottom of tree
Ask "What else can I do for this tree? clear off any extra branches at the bottom?
You can trim off lower branches with a lopper
Ask which car is theirs
Give them the price tag and tell them they can pay inside.
"Wrap it"
Put it though the bailer and cut off the trailing netting
Tie it up
With a friend bring the tree to the car
How to tie a tree to a car?!
Gently rest it on top of the car
The tip usually goes in the front
Be careful not to scratch the roof and fasten down firmly for a safe drive home
We have videos somewhere...
What else do we have for sale?
Garlands
Wreathes
Porch pots
We collect coats! There should be a container marked for coat collection
Restocking trees - Captains should help direct this, but it's something we need to do:
We will need to replenish trees in pods that have been sold
Find a similar size tree for open pod spaces
Cut and remove twine from it, the branches will lower over time
Making extra strings for stringing trees to cars
These should be able 10 - 12 feet long
We might have a device that does this for us
Keep area tidy
Sweep up twine, debris
Put branches pile - usually a trailer is collecting them
End of your shift:
Check in with your shift leader
Return safety vest & box cutter to trailer
